Care for Sanday
Care for Sanday
This community-driven initiative aims to provide twelve adaptable houses and a community health hub, enhancing the quality of life for the island’s population while ensuring sustainability and accessibility. This Sanday project started in 2015 by Women’s Guild following the ersonal experience of one of the group becoming a resident at Kallisgarth, Westray.
Project Goals
The Care for Sanday Project seeks to achieve five main goals: –
- To enable residents to remain in Sanday for the whole of their lives, they are no longer forced to leave in pursuit of care and support when developing complex health/mobility needs.
- To free up existing housing stock to be renovated by new families moving to the islands, families who bring new skills and children to the school.
- To provide a central health hub to deliver various health-related activities and services for all Sanday residents.
- To create a range of local employment opportunities and to support paid and unpaid care workers on the island.
- To develop the local economy and help provide a sustainable future for Sanday
The project will achieve this by constructing twelve two and three-bedroom houses. The houses will be specifically designed to be adaptable to accommodate a person’s changing needs as their health and support needs develop. The houses should, first and foremost, be homes that are comfortable, affordable and efficient to run.
Project Aims
- To work with existing groups and organisations to provide an enhanced level of care for those who need it, in their existing home or in the new housing
- To raise the status and self-esteem of carers, and facilitate training opportunities to ensure career progression
- To be able, eventually, to offer 24 hour care when required so that, when appropriate, those who wish it can receive (eg) end of life care in Sanday where family or friends would augment the statutory services
- To offer facilities for convalescence (and thereby reduce delayed discharge from hospital)
- To include, as a pivotal part of the project, a community health hub with a communal area containing: a social area for residents of the housing which could also be used for daycare for non-residents; kitchen; communal laundry room; office and storage space for carers; a room/suite for use for short breaks, convalescence or end of life care; a treatment room for use by visiting physiotherapists, podiatrists etc; an information hub
- To support unpaid carers
- To provide employment opportunities for young(er) people, thereby helping to keep a well-balanced demographic in the island.
